degree show collection

This collection showcases the contrast between the beauty in ephemera and treasured objects. We collect and adorn our bodies with precious, durable objects, and in contrast our bodies are constantly in flux.

Throughout history, body adornment has been used to comment on the transient nature of life and the human body. Initially, historic Memento Mori jewellery and Vanitas paintings influenced this collection. This influence can be seen in the collection’s recurring fly motif, a motif also used in Vanitas as a reminder of the impermanence of the physical body. This then led to an exploration of transient natural phenomena, reflected in the use of unconventional and transient materials such as shed snakeskins and bones. Further exploring the theme of ephemerality, some elements of the work are designed to look as though they are floating, creating an optical illusion when being worn.
